A day in Holland

0

It is absolutely refreshing to get out in a bright, sunny day after long winter months. I had been reading about Holland, Michigan ever since I moved to Michigan and finally visited the beautiful city last month.

Holland is located in western Michigan, approximately 2 hours from suburban Detroit. It is known for it’s rich dutch history and the famous Tulip Time Festival. Dutch settlers in Holland have carried along their culture which is on grand display through variety of art form every year in May during Tulip Time festival.

Centennial Park is one of the main attractions during Tulip Time Festival. With wide variety of local vendors with products from paintings, jewelry, snacks to bird houses, it is like a farmers market except there are no fresh fruits and vegetables. Here, dancers perform traditional dutch dance on the street during the festival. Another interesting part is there are tulips in every corner of the streets. It’s magnificent!

Even the sidewalks are full of tulips in the street of Holland.

A short 8 minutes drive from Centennial Park will take you to Windmill Island Garden. Windmill Island is a dutch-themed park with tulip gardens and a working windmill brought from Netherlands about two hundreds year ago. This place is totally dreamy. It feels like you are in a fairy-tale dutch land far far away. The windmill adds an unique aura to the tulip field and gives a vintage touch to your photographs.

Similarly, in the same vicinity there is another tulip field called Veldheer Tulip Gardens. This place has amazing variety of Tulips throughout May. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it this time as I found out about it in last minute and had to head back home. Next time I need to make sure I get there early so I can visit all attractions in a day.

Holland gets incredibly colorful and beautiful in May. Thus, you can visit Holland anytime in May not just during Tulip Festival which is usually in early May.
