Haluwa with Aloo Dum

Do you have a food that takes you back to your childhood? Well, I do. Haluwa always reminds me of home. I grew up eating this dish as a kid, back in Nepal. Nepalese folks love it! I absolutely love it so today I am sharing a little piece of home.

Haluwa is made of suji flour. You can find it in Indian grocery stores. Haluwa is quite simple to make. It is generally considered as a dessert but depending on the side dish you can make it breakfast, lunch, or whatever you want it to be. Here, I have aloo dum as the side dish. Aloo Dum, a spicy potato dish, is also super easy to make.

Ingredients for Haluwa:
Suji flour – ½ cup
Butter – 3 tbsp
Water – 3 cup
Sugar – ½ cup
Cashew – ¼ cup halved
Almond – ¼ cup chopped or flakes
Ground Cinnamon – ¼ tsp

Heat a medium-sized pan. Add butter. Meanwhile, boil water in another pan. Fry cashew and almond in the butter. Then, add suji flour. Stir and fry until the flour turns golden brown. Keep an eye on the water. As it starts boiling add sugar. Add sugar-water to the flour. Sprinkle cinnamon. Fold the mixture until it forms a thick paste. That’s it! Haluwa is ready. It can be served warm or cold. Side tip: Warm haluwa with dark coffee is amazing!

Ingredients for Aloo Dum:

Boiled potato – 2 medium-sized potatoes, boiled and chopped
Onion – ½ cup chopped
Vegetable oil – 2 tbsp
Ginger & Garlic paste – ½ tbsp
Tomato paste – 1 tbsp
Turmeric – ½ tsp
Cumin Powder – 1 tbsp
Chilli Powder – ½ tsp
Salt – to taste
Cilantro – a small amount to garnish

Heat a pan. Add vegetable oil. Fry onion until it is transparent. Then add in all the spices – turmeric, ginger-garlic paste, cumin powder, salt, chili powder. Mix well and cook it for a couple of minutes. Add in water and tomato paste. Let it shimmer. Add potato, give it a good mix, and there it is, your delicious aloo dum. Garnish with some cilantro.

Haluwa and aloo dum is an easy, quick, and tasty combo to enjoy with your family and friends. If you are feeling a little ambitious, make some masala tea (tea with milk, cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon) and enjoy it with this yummy lunch. It will elevate the mood to whole another level.
